Top 5 Series I Won’t Be Finishing | Top 5 Tuesdays

As many of you who read this blog know, on Tuesdays, it’s a Top 5 Tuesdays blog post around here. Usually, prompts are provided by the lovely Shanah @ the Bionic Bookworm, but this week, she’s taking a break, so I’ve been left to my own devices (uh oh!).

Wracking my brains trying to think of a post to do, I took a look back at past Top 5 Tuesdays and found “Top 5 Series I Won’t be Finishing.” And I thought, “Hey! I have several series that I have just not finished, nor will I ever, I’ll make a post about that!” So here you have it, my top 5 series that I’m never, ever, ever going to finish:

1. To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before – Jenny Han

This might come as a bit of a shocker, but I actually preferred the Neflix movie to the book on this one (I know, right?!). When I read the book (in anticipation of the show coming out), I was really blown away by my dislike of Peter. I felt his motives and his personality were not acceptable at all and I couldn’t tell if this was just because he was a poorly written character (i.e. he was coming across not in the way Han intended) or if I was just somehow just reading him completely wrong, but he just rubbed me the wrong way and I thought he was not a good choice for Laura Jean.

But then when I watched the Netflix movie, I was actually pleasantly surprised by movie Peter. He had way more depth, was way less of a douche, and was overall just a better written character than his book version. Call me crazy, but I just could not stand for book Peter and so I say “No thank-you,” to the rest of this series.

2. A Court of Thorns & Roses – Sara J. Maas

Boy, I might get flayed alive after this post because here is another series darling that just…didn’t do it for me. I see A Court of Thorns and Roses everywhere on the book blogosphere, but I read it and I immediately decided to DNF this series.

I mean, it was ok and I know, I know there’s supposed to be a big swicheroo in the next book, but I honestly didn’t care for any of the characters in this series, or the world they lived in. I love me some fantasy, but I just wasn’t here for it in this one.

3. Akata Witch – Nnedi Okorafor

So, I read this book as part of a work book club and while I did enjoy some elements of it, it just wasn’t my jam overall. I know that many have called it an African Harry Potter, but I honestly didn’t fall into the story as easily as I did HP. The world itself and the magic that exists in it just weren’t described well enough for me.

I liked the characters and I thought that it was an interesting story, but it took a long time to develop. This book was written for teens in mind, but in my opinion it came off as more of an adult story – in that the writing just didn’t seem like it would appeal to teens. It was very heavy and the plot was definitely a slow burn. Not what you want in a supposedly action-adventure story with magic.

4. And I Darken – Kiersten White

I’m kind of mad that I’m not into this story enough to finish the series, because it sounded so awesome and up my alley: an empowering female take on Vlad the Impaler. I mean, that sounds badass, and it’s historical fiction, which is also my jam. But I really, really did not like Lada at all!

I thought the world was pretty, the people in it were mostly cool, but I just could not stand Lada. I didn’t care for her brother, Radu, either. And I just can’t get behind a story where I don’t like the main characters (I know, I know, I finished the “Shadow and Bone” series, even though I hate Alina’s guts, but I don’t know, there were more compelling elements in that story than this one).

5. Me Before You – Jojo Moyes

It’s odd, that the majority of the books on this list are YA, but I had to include this adult fiction story because I JUST CAN’T with it! I mean, it definitely tore my guts out when I read it. I was incredibly sad, mad, upset about the ending and I knew before I even finished the book completely that I just couldn’t bring myself to read the next one. I didn’t care enough.

Don’t get me wrong, I think Louisa is a really interesting, cool character. But I just wasn’t willing to read another book after the ending of this one, with Louisa moving on. I like her, but not enough to see what else she’s going to get up to in the romantic area. I think this would have been a perfectly descent stand alone (you can have those in the Romance world!) but for some reason Moyes just wanted to keep on trucking with Louisa Clark. Fine, be my guest, but not with me.
