Top 5 Magical Creatures | Top 5 Tuesdays

Top 5 Tuesdays and their topics are brought to you by Shanah @ the Bionic Bookworm. Check out her blog, she’s awesome, and this page for the list of topics for May!

This is a super cool topic. I have always been a big fantasy buff and there are so many cool magical creatures out there that I’ve encountered through reading. Some of my favorite books have dragons and thestrals and fairies. It’s going to be a super cool list.

Here it goes:

1. Dragon

Book cover of "Dealing with Dragons" by Patricia C. Wrede

Dragoooooons!!! Dragons are so cool. Big, flying lizards that breath fire. What more can you want from a magical creature? I have read so many fantasy books that involve dragons. Obviously, my favorite among these is The Two Princesses of Bamarre tied with Dealing With Dragons, because Kazul is the coolest dragon character out there. But Vollys, from Two Princesses, is such a great character. She’s your typical greedy dragon, but she has so much more depth. My favorite part of this book is when Addie is basically Vollys’ captive and has to entertain her in order not to be eaten. There’s such great dialogue in these scenes. It’s the best. Read it if you haven’t!!!

2. Phoenix

Book cover of "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone" by J.K. Rowling

Fawkes was one of my favorite creatures in the whole Harry Potter series. I love the idea of a bird that is reborn. I’m also a pretty big bird fan, so that might be a bit of an indicator. Plus, I think that the idea of a phoenix is so pretty! A vibrant, flaming red bird soaring around being all magical. Too cool. If I could choose to have a magical animal (aside from a dragon, of course!), it would definitely be a phoenix.

3. Direwolf

Book cover of "Game of Thrones" by George R. R. Martin

I mean, who doesn’t love a magical wolf? When I first read Game of Thrones, I was so excited about each of the Stark children having a direwolf and then…well, if you’ve read the books or seen the show, you know how heartbreaking it gets. But the concept of them is so cool, and I love the warg element that Bran and maybe some of the other Starks have. It’s such a cool idea and the thought of a super big wolf roaming around and potentially being your own personal bodyguard is pretty dang cool.

4. Fairy

There are so many different renditions of fairies! But I have a fondness for them ever since I read Ella Enchanted. I loved Ella’s fairy godmother, Mandy, and I thought their kind of magic was so, so cool. I’ve seen other renditions of fairies that are similar but their power is either enhanced or of a specific kind. Whatever the case, these magical beings are just fascinating. Perhaps I like them because I like magic so much? I’m not sure, but I do know that I like them!

5. Werewolf

Book cover of "Blood and Chocolate" by Annette Curtis Klause

I find werewolves to be fascinating. Part human-part beast. I’ve read a lot of books that involve werewolves, but I think my favorite so far is Blood and Chocolate by Annette Curtis Klause. I think she brings a lot of mysticism to the werewolf genre. Plus, I love the pack dynamic in this book. It’s such a great story, and romance story at that. I was so, so into this book – I read it multiple times. If you haven’t read it yet, I highly recommend doing so.

So there you have it. My favorite magical creatures. What do you think of my selections? Thank you for reading this post. Let’s chat in the comments! And, as always, happy reading!
