August TBR & Challenge Books

I’m really excited for August because of two reasons: one, because I have a lot of books I’m excited about reading for this month and two, it’s my birthday month!!!

So, let’s take a look at what I’ll be reading this month:

Book Riot’s Read Harder Challenge 2019:

Book cover of "Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie" by Alan Bradley

I’ve since checked my reading challenge list and I have read enough by this point that all I need to do is read one book a month for this challenge and the challenge will be complete! So this month, my Book Riot challenge book will be Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie, a cozy mystery recommended to me by a co-worker/friend. I’m really excited, because if I enjoy it, then I have a whole new series to dig into!

Reading Women Challenge 2019 books:

Book cover of "The Memoirs of Lady Hyegyong," translated by JaHyun Kim Haboush

I’ll be reading The Memoirs of Lady HyeGyong, which will fulfill my translated book published before 1945 prompt and because this book is not a commonly read one, I had to purchase it. But I don’t mind, because I’m really curious about Korean culture and this book sounds like it could be a real eye-opener. I also like that it’s a memoir of a woman living in the 18th century. I can’t wait to see through her eyes!

I’ll be reading a second book for my Reading Women challenge as well, but I’m doubling up with it because it’s also one of Emma Watson’s Our Shared Shelf reading club picks.

Our Shared Shelf:

Book cover of "Butterfly" by Yusra Mardini

For Our Shared Shelf, Emma chose two books for July/August. I just finished reading Solito, Solita for July, so for August I’ll be reading Butterfly by Yusra Mardini. I’m pretty excited about reading this one. I’ve not read any books by an athlete before, but this woman’s journey from refugee to Olympian sounds so fascinating! I’m excited to learn more about her and to get a glimpse of the world of a refugee. I think books like this are important to read because it gives you a wider perspective. I am looking forward to learning more about her life and accomplishments.

ARCs of the Month:

I’m so excited about the ARCs that I have that I’m going to attempt to read two this month. And boy are they polar opposites!

There Will Come A Darkness is a sci-fi/fantasy novel that’s been compared to Six of Crows and Graceling, so I’m pretty stoked to read it! Plus – check out that cover! It’s fire!!!

Bringing Down the Duke is a romance novel, but it sounds so fun! It’s about a woman who is working for the women’s suffrage movement and has to recruit men of influence to help them with their cause. I’m sensing a strong enemies-to-lovers vibe, which ticks one of my boxes, so I’m excited to see how it will play out.

My TBR Picks:

So I’m finally going to read Anne of Green Gables. No, I did not read this classic growing up, but I’ve seen an adaptation of it and I’ve heard so many good things that I think I better get on the bandwagon already!

I just received The Kingdom from my library – I had seen it reviewed on someone’s blog and the premise just sounded to interesting not to pick up! I mean, android Disney princesses? Murder? Mystery? Sign me up!

What books are you reading this month?

If you’ve read any books from my list, let me know what you think! Do you have any of these selections on your TBR? Let me know in the comments!

It’s another month of reading dangerously and I hope I’m up to the challenge!

  1. Hm this is my first time hearing of The Memoirs of Lady HyeGyong, very interesting list! I was going to read Anne of Green Gables last month but got sidetracked. The writing style is very approachable and charming so looking forward to getting back to it later. 😀
