Top 5 Fall Reading Recommendations | Top 5 Tuesdays

Hello again! It’s Tuesday, and of course that means it’s time for a Top 5 post. Top 5 Tuesdays and their topics are brought to you by Shanah @ the Bionic Bookworm. Check out her blog, she’s awesome, and this page for the list of topics for September!

For me, fall reads tend to be spooky or fantastical in nature. That’s not to say I won’t read something outside of those two genres, but I mostly like to stick to those two because there’s something I find cozy about them. And fall is cozy time! So here are some of my recommendations of really great books that I think fit perfectly for the fall.

1. The Two Princesses of Bamarre – Gail Carson Levine

This is one of my top fantasy picks, in general, but I think it would be a great read for Fall. The story doesn’t happen just in the autumnal season, but over a few seasons, but the fantasy of it is really beautiful and I think perfect for fall. Dragons, heroic princesses, a devastating illness that threatens to take away loved ones…It’s a great book, but I would definitely love to curl up in an armchair on a blustery fall day and read it. You could definitely finish it in a day.

2. Rebecca – Daphne du Maurier

Now, to the opposite end of the spectrum: an adult (Gothic) mystery. While there’s something fantastical about Rebecca it is rooted in realistic fiction. There’s a tinge of ghostly, from-the-grave reach that pervades the story, but at its core, this book is just a good ol’ fashioned mystery. While I found the main character to be a bit of a wet-blanket, the story itself is pretty powerful, and, I think, perfect for fall. It’s got that creep factor that would make it a good Halloween read.

3. Sadie – Courtney Summers

I know I was just talking about this book in my Friday Face-Off, but I felt like I had to use it again for this prompt. It’s really a perfect pick for Fall. I think there are Summer elements to it, but essentially it feels like a fall book to me. There’s that mystery element to it, plus the Missing Persons and the death that are part of it give it a really strong Halloween spooky feel. It’s a great book and you could easily get all comfy and curl up with it and read it all in a day.

4. Anything by Agatha Christie

Let’s face it: Christie is the Queen of crime. I love anything she writes and her stuff, any of it really, is great for fall. Cozy or not, her books have that mysterious element and they are so much fun to read. There are probably more Halloweeny selections, but I picked the 4:50 From Paddington to recommend because it’s one of my favorites, a Miss Marple. It’s so, so good. I highly recommend it.

5. M is for Magic – Neil Gaiman

Lastly, I’ll leave you with my most Halloweeny pick of all: Neil Gaiman. I picked M is for Magic because it’s got a little bit of everything, plus it has a particularly Fall-esque story called, “October in the Chair,” which I love the most out of all the stories. If you’ve never read any Gaiman before, this is a good place to start. You get a perfect taste of his style in bite-sized pieces. It’s a really nice collection of stories and perfect for Fall.
