“As you wish…” | Friday Face-Off

Friday Face-off is a weekly meme created by Books by Proxy and now hosted by Lynn’s Book Blog that focuses on book covers.

The rules…

Each week, following a predetermined theme, click here to see the list of themes for 2019, choose a book, compare a couple of the different covers available for that particular book and choose your favorite.

This week is special, since there’s no specific theme – it’s a freebie. I thought I might just not post today, but then…I thought of the perfect book to use. I hope you guys like it!

This Week’s Theme:

“As you wish.” – William Goldman, The Princess Bride

– Freebie

My book choice: The Princess Bride by William Goldman

So, this is but a taste of the covers available for this book. It’s been around awhile and it’s been published in a LOT of languages. I just picked and chose ones that stood out to me.

My favorites:

The first one really gives me that fantasy vibe. I like how mysterious it looks and way that Buttercup and Wesley look, and that shadowy figure behind them (maybe Humperdink?) is cool. I also really love the cool palette they used.

The second one…I’m biased. This is the copy I own, the one I’m used to, I just really love it. I definitely think it screams fantasy. I love how Buttercup looks like she’s straight from a medieval tapestry. Her look is awesome ! I also think this cover has a storybook feel to it, as well, which is the point of the book, anyway.

The third one…I like it visually. I love purple, so this cover definitely appeals to that sense.I also love the title font. It’s bold, it’s storybook, it’s really cool! Paired with the tree limbs and the small couple depicted, and the overall minimalist feel…I really dig it.

Least favorite(s):

Since there were so many to choose from, I have a few that I definitely don’t like for one reason or another. I feel like these six least capture the spirit of the story.

The first one is just really strange to me, it makes me think of The Three Musketeers, rather than The Princess Bride. T

The second book reminds me of Robin Hood rather than The Princess Bride.

The third – I get what they’re going for, but I don’t like it. It’s too silly looking!

The fourth one makes me think of a horror story, for some reason, with the red looking like blood dripping down and it’s at a wedding and there are two shadowy figures…I get what part they’re trying to refer too, but it doesn’t give me that fantasy vibe!

The fifth is just not creative enough. It’s just words – which I don’t think pairs well with a fantasy book. There needs to be some imagery to draw you in!

The sixth and last one…This one makes me think of The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, to be honest. Who are they trying to depict on this cover? Buttercup? But why does she look like a fairy queen? Why does she have a wand/scepter? It just doesn’t fit.

I think these are probably the most visually attractive to me. They all capture the spirit of the book, the fantasy element, and they’re really just visually interesting.

My favorite:

I have to go with my personal copy. It’s definitely my favorite. It’s familiar, it fits the theme, and I think it looks just like a storybook.

Thoughts & Thanks

Which is your favorite? Do you agree with my choice? Let’s talk about it in the comments!
