Hello again! It’s Tuesday, and of course that means it’s time for a Top 5 post. Top 5 Tuesdays and their topics are brought to you by Shanah @ the Bionic Bookworm. Check out her blog, she’s awesome, and this page for the list of topics for March!
Last year, Shanah introduced a monthly topic that featured our Top 5 Books with titles that began with A-Z. I’m excited that she’s now returning to the themed month, this time shining a light on favorite authors. For having a book blog, it’s actually not that often that I talk specifically about the authors themselves, but I am thrilled with this opportunity to do so, since there are so many, many amazing authors whose works I admire and cherish.
So, without further ado, let’s get to it!
A is for Austen!
I gotta go with my girl, Jane. I love her writing so much. The first time I read Pride & Prejudice, I fell in love with her world and with the characters she created. She was such a brilliant writer, and for her time, she focused on topics that were just not being written about! I love how many strong heroines she has put on the page and I love getting to know them and watch them fall in love and form friendships…She’s one of my favorite writers and I hope you’ll give her a read, if you haven’t already!
B is for Bacigalupi!
There are so many authors that I love whose names begin with B, who knew! But I really want to put a spotlight on Paolo Bacigalupi. When I first read his book, Ship Breaker, I was blown. Away. His writing is so amazing! I was hooked! He really knows how to lay down a plot! I’ve read books of his for YA and for adults, and I think he can easily do both. I also love how much he uses his writing to focus on climate change – nearly all of his books have climate as a major thematic part, either in the shape of the world or as part of the main focus. If you haven’t read any of his books, I’d suggest starting with Ship Breaker, since it’s such a gritty, fast-paced sci-fi that will definitely have you turning pages!
C is for Christie!
For the Queen of Crime! I had to represent Christie in this list. I love everything I’ve read by her. I think she writes some really amazing mysteries. I think I can attribute her to the main reason I love reading mysteries in the first place. And she’s a fascinating person, too! If you haven’t heard about her random disappearance, definitely check it out! I think I like her work because she creates such interesting characters. I’m always so drawn into a story because all these characters feel so real and their problems feel like they could actually happen. Plus, her stories make excellent road trip material! Highly recommend.
D is for DiCamillo!
I definitely don’t want to leave out middle-grade authors in this series, so I’m happy to represent Kate DiCamillo in this list! I think she’s most known for her story, Because of Winn-Dixie, which is definitely a tear-jerker. I love that book, but I most love her book The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane, which made me weep like a babe, I was so deeply moved. I love how she can expound on such deep, resonating topics for an audience of elementary aged and early teen readers. I think she really does every child a service by writing about difficult topics, like loss and finding yourself. If you haven’t heard of her or not read her books, please do! They’re short, sweet, and infinitely beautiful.
E is for Eager!
And lastly, another middle-grade author! Lindsay Eager has written a couple of middle-grade books, but her book Hour of the Bees has to be my favorite. She managed to weave such magic into her storytelling with this book. I loved the play between what was real and what wasn’t, and how she blurred those lines. She is definitely a force to be reckoned with when it comes to developing a story. Middle-grade readers are so lucky that she’s around!
