April TBR

I’m really looking forward to April’s lineup of books. Spring is here and I’m really happy to see things growing again. The weather is getting warmer which also means I’ll be able to start reading outside again! I’m hoping to read a lot more this month, but I won’t go crazy.

These are the books I currently have on my TBR for the month:

House of the Spirits by Isabel Allende

This book has been on my radar for a while, so I’m glad to finally set it on my TBR for April. I’m reading it to fulfill a Reading Women Challenge prompt, “South American Author in Translation.” I don’t know too much about the book itself, but I know that Allende is a revered author and this book is her first and is highly regarded. I actually meant to read this book last year, but just didn’t end up having the time.

They Called Me Number One by Bev Sellars

This is another book I’ve picked to fulfill a Reading Women Challenge prompt, “A Memoir by an Indigenous, First Nations, Native, or Aboriginal Woman.” Sellars’ memoir tells the story of three generations of woman who attended the St. Joseph’s Mission School in British Columbia, a school that separated native children from their families and “civilized” them. They were often given numbers instead of names. I know this book will be heartbreaking, but it’s a part of history that I want to know more about.

Free Food for Millionaires by Min Jin Lee

I’ve had this book checked out since January, but I’m finally making time to read it. I read Lee’s Pachinko and really enjoyed it, so I was curious about her other book. I’ve also heard that this book is going to be adapted as a series, so I wanted to read it beforehand, anyway. I don’t really know too much about it, besides, but Lee is an excellent writer, so I’m really looking forward to it.

Hot British Boyfriend by Kristy Boyce

Every once in a while, I just want to read an easy, fun romance, no nonsense. I don’t want to have to think or ruminate, I just want a swoony, relaxing read about two people falling in love. I came across this in the general book world and knew I wanted to read it. I, too, would love a hot British boyfriend, but I guess I’ll have to live vicariously through this main character, instead.

The Republic of Birds by Jessica Miller

So the blurb is: a witch must save her sister from evil birds. Got it, sign me up. I received an ARC for this book and I’m excited to crack it open and read it. I am super intrigued by anything remotely magical. This is a middle-grade fantasy and I haven’t read anything by this author yet, so I’m looking forward to seeing how this one is. Middle-grade can be hit or miss, but I really love the cover and I like the sound of the story. I’m ready to be swept away!

The Forest of Stolen Girls by June Hur

I read Hur’s The Silence of Bones and really loved it, so I jumped at the chance to read this ARC. Hur writes such haunting, mysterious stories, and this one looks to be no different. A girl’s father goes missing while investigating the disappearance of 13 young woman, so she decides to pick up where he left off. I mean, I love a good mystery and this one sounds really interesting!
